語源
「autology」はギリシャ語の「autologia」に由来し、'auto-'は「自己」、'logia'は「語り・学問」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「autologia」は後にラテン語系（近代ラテン語）で『autologia』として用いられ、19世紀以降に英語の 'autology' として採用された。
元来は「自己についての語り・学問」を意味したが、次第に語が自分自身を記述する性質（自記述性）を指す用法で使われることが多くなった。
