「autologist」はギリシャ語の語幹に由来し、「autós（自己）」と「lógos（語・言葉・学問）」から成る。
「autologist」は近代ラテン語的な語形成（例: autologia／autologus）を経て、自己論や自己参照を扱う専門家を指す語として英語に入った。
