語源
「autoindex」は英語由来で、接頭辞「auto-」はギリシャ語の'autos'（「自己」）に由来し、'index'はラテン語の'index'（「指し示す者・指標」）に由来しています。
「auto-」は19世紀に接合形として英語に入り、'index'はラテン語'index'が古フランス語・中英語を経て英語化しました。'autoindex'という複合語は20世紀後半の計算機分野で、ディレクトリ一覧など自動生成される索引を指す用語として登場しました。
