「autogram」はギリシャ語の語 'autogramma' に由来し、'auto-' は「自己」、'gramma' は「文字」や「書かれたもの」を意味した。
'autogramma' は学術的な語形成（auto- + -gram）を経て英語で 'autogram' として作られ、'telegram' や 'anagram' といった '-gram' 付きの語に倣って現代英語に入った。
