「autoelevation」はギリシャ語とラテン語の要素から生じた語で、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「auto-」（ギリシャ語『autós』＝「自己」）とラテン語由来の名詞「elevation」（ラテン語『elevatio』、『elevare』＝「持ち上げる」）の結合による。
「auto-」はギリシャ語『autós』（「自己」）に由来し、ラテン語由来の英語名詞「elevation」（『elevatio』）に近代英語で結び付けられ、『自己で上げる／自動で上げる』という複合語が技術的文脈で20世紀ごろに生じたと考えられる。
当初は機械的・文字通りの『自己で上げる／自動で上げる』を意味していたが、後に『自己の地位を高める（自己宣伝）』のような比喩的用法も生じた。
