「autocombustion」はギリシャ語とラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「auto-」（『autos』、意味：自己）とラテン語の語『combustio』（『comburere』に由来、意味：燃えること）から成る造語です。
「autocombustion」は近代英語で接頭辞『auto-』と『combustion』を結合して作られた複合語であり、19〜20世紀の科学技術用語として成立しました。古い英語には単独の語としては存在しませんでした。
