語源
「autochthon」はギリシャ語の「autókthōn」に由来し、'auto-'は「自己」、'khthōn'は「大地」を意味した。
「autochthon」はラテン語系（Late Latin/New Latin）の『autochthonus』を経て、学術・人類学用語として英語に入り、現代英語の「autochthon」（複数形は「autochthons」）になった。
もともとは「土地から生まれた者（文字どおり大地生まれ）」を意味していたが、時代を経て人類学・生態学・文学で用いられる「元々の住民・固有種」という広い意味に発展した。
