語源
『autochthon』は古代ギリシャ語の『autokhthōn（αὐτόχθων）』に由来し、『autos』は「自ら」、『khthōn』は「地、土」を意味する。
『autokhthōn』は学術ラテン語や近代ヨーロッパ諸語に移り、英語に『autochthon』（複数形『autochthones』）として借用され、ギリシャ語の構成要素を保った。
当初は「土から生まれた（地生の）」を意味したが、時代とともに人類学や文学で「先住民（その土地に固有の住民）」を指す用法が定着した。
