語源
「auspicy」はラテン語の「auspicium」に由来し、そこでの「auspex」は鳥を観察して吉凶を占う人（鳥占者）を指した。
「auspicium」は後期ラテン語・古フランス語を経て中英語の 'auspice' や稀な変種 'auspicy' になり、最終的に現代英語の 'auspice/auspices' として残った。
当初は「鳥による占い（鳥卜）」を意味したが、次第に「前兆・しるし」に拡張され、さらに現代では「後援・保護」の意味でも使われるようになった。
