語源
「auspicate」はラテン語の「auspicari」に由来し、「avis」は「鳥」を、「specere」は「見る」を意味し、「鳥を観察する者（＝兆候を占う者）」という意味を生みました。
「auspicate」は中世・後期ラテン語の「auspicari」「auspicatus」から英語に入り、近代英語期にかけて占いや兆候の解釈に関する語として用いられました。
当初は「（特に鳥を）観察して兆候を占う」ことを意味しましたが、次第により一般的に「兆候を読み取って予言する」という意味に広がりました。
