語源
『aureola』はラテン語に由来し、もともと『aureola』（『aureus』の小形）で、『aurum』は『金』、『aureus』は『金色の』を意味した。
『aureola』は中世ラテン語や古フランス語（『aureole』）を経て中英語の『aureole／aureola』となり、現代英語の『aureola』（および変形の『aureole』）になった。
当初は『小さな金のもの／小さな金色の輪』を指したが、次第に人物や物の周りの『光の輪（光輪）』という意味に変化した。
