語源
『aufklarung』はドイツ語に由来し、動詞『aufklären』と名詞化接尾辞『-ung』から成り、接頭辞『auf-』は「上・〜へ」、語幹『klar』は「明らか・明瞭」を意味した。
『aufklären』は中高ドイツ語の形（例: 'ufklæren'）に由来し、近代ドイツ語の名詞『Aufklärung』へ発展、18世紀に啓蒙（運動）を指す語として定着した。
当初は「明らかにする行為」「解明」を意味したが、次第に歴史的な啓蒙運動を指す意味や軍事的な「偵察」の意味も帯びるようになった。
