語源
『attorn』はアングロ・フランス語／古フランス語の'atorner'に由来し、接頭辞'a-'（ラテン語の ad- に由来）は「～へ」を意味し、語根' torner/turner'は「回す／任命する」を意味した。
『attorn』は古フランス語の'atorner'から中英語の'attournen'などを経て、現代英語の'attorn'（および'attorns'などの活用形）になった。
当初は「～へ向ける／任命する」の意味だったが、次第に法律用語として「新しい所有者を認める、あるいは賃借権・利害を移す」という専門的な意味に発展した。
