語源
「attorn」はアングロ・フランス語／古フランス語の『atorner』に由来し、接頭辞『a-』は「～へ」を意味し、『torner』（ラテン語『tornare』由来）は「向きを変える・回す」を意味した。
『attorn』は古フランス語の『atorner』から中英語の『attournen／attourne』のような形に変化し、最終的に現代英語の動詞『attorn』（動名詞『attorning』）になった。
当初は「（忠誠心・注意などを）向ける・向きを変える」を意味したが、次第に『新しい主・家主を認める／賃借関係や権利を移す』というより専門的な法律的意味に発展した。
