語源
「atticism」はフランス語の「atticisme」に由来し、ここで「Attic-」は「アッティカ（アテネ周辺地域）の」を意味し、接尾辞「-isme」は「慣行・主義」を意味した。
「atticism」はラテン語の「Atticismus」やフランス語の「atticisme」から英語に入り（16〜17世紀）、最終的にはギリシア語の「Attikismos」（「アッティコス」＝アッティカの）に遡る。
当初は「アッティカ方言やその形式の使用・模倣」を指したが、次第に「簡潔で純粋、上品な文体」というより広い意味に拡張された。
