語源
「attestant」はラテン語に由来し、特に動詞「attestari」から来ている。ここで「ad-」は「～へ」を意味し、「testari」は「証言する、証明する」を意味する。
「attestant」はラテン語の「attestari」から中世（古フランス語の「atester」など）を経て中英語の動詞（例：「attesten」）になり、接尾辞「-ant」によって英語の名詞・形容詞形「attestant」ができた。
