語源
「attemperator」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語に由来し、特に「attemperare」（ラテン語の接頭辞'ad-'と動詞'temperare'から成る）に由来する。'ad-'は「〜へ」を意味し、'temperare'は「混ぜる・調整する」を意味した。
ラテン語の'temperare'から後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の'adtemperare'/'attemperare'へ変化し、「調節する者」を意味する語として英語に入り、やがて技術用語としての用法（蒸気の温度を下げる装置）も確立した。
当初は『和らげる・調整する者』を意味していたが、時代とともに工学分野で『蒸気の温度を低下させる装置』という専門的な意味を持つようになった。
