語源
「atomy」はギリシャ語に由来し、具体的には『atomos』(ἀτόμος)から来ており、接頭辞の「a-」は「～でない」、『tomos』は「切ること」を意味した（したがって「切れない」「分割できない」）。
『atomy』は中世ラテン語・中英語を経て英語に入り、中英語の'atomie'などの形を経て現代英語の'atomy'の形で用いられるようになった。科学的・文芸的文脈で使われた。
