語源
「atomy」はギリシャ語の「atomos」から来ており、接頭辞の「a-」は「〜でない」、語根の「tomos」は「切る」を意味した。
「atomy」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語（例：「atomia」）を経て、中英語・近代英語で「atomie」となり、最終的に現代英語の「atomy」になった。
当初は「分割できない粒子」を指していたが、時代とともに「きわめて小さな存在」や「痩せ細った人」を意味する文学的・古語的用法が生じた。
