語源
「athetoid」は新ラテン語「athetoides」に由来し、接頭辞「a-」は「〜でない」を意味し、「thetos」は（ギリシア語由来で）「置かれた・置く」を意味した。
「athetoid」は新ラテン語「athetoides」から変化し、19世紀後半に運動障害の医学用語として英語に取り入れられた（「athetosis」に由来）。
当初は「アテトーシスに似た（文字通りは『固定されていない』）」という意味だったが、次第に医学領域で「ゆっくりとした不随意のよじれるような動きに関する・それを示す」という意味になった。
