語源
「athbash」はヘブライ語に由来し、'Aleph'（アルファ）と 'Tav'、'Bet' と 'Shin' の字配列から作られたアクロスティック（『אַתְבָּשׁ』／転写: atbash）で、文字の組み合わせが逆置換の対応を示している。
「athbash」はヘブライ語のアクロスティック『אַתְבָּשׁ』（atbash）から変化し、聖典注釈や暗号に関する中世以降の文献で用いられ、現代英語では 'Atbash' や 'athbash' として使われるようになった。
元々は聖書・ユダヤ注釈で用いられたヘブライ文字の逆順置換暗号を指したが、時代とともに他の文字体系にも適用される逆アルファベット置換暗号一般を指すようになった。
