語源
'asyllabic'はギリシャ語の否定接頭辞'a-'（「〜でない」）と、ギリシャ語の'sullabē'を経たラテン語'syllaba'（「音節」）に由来する英語の'syllabic'とが結合してできた語である。
'asyllabic'は英語で、否定の接頭辞'a-'とラテン語'syllaba'（ギリシャ語'sullabē'に由来）から来る英語の形容詞'syllabic'が結合してできた。
当初から『音節を持たない／非音節の』という意味で使われており、現代でも主にその意味（特に音声学的用法）で用いられている。
