語源
『asyllabia』はニューラテン語／医療用語の造語に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素「a-（否定）」と「syllabē（纏めること、ここでは『音節』）』から成る。
『asyllabia』はギリシャ語の「a-」＋「syllabē」からニュ―ラテン語的に形成され、ギリシャ語の'syllabē'が後にラテン語の'syllaba'を経て英語の専門用語に入った。
当初からおよび記録上では「音節の欠如」を意味し、その基本的な意味は保たれているが、現代英語では専門的かつ稀な用語として用いられる。
