語源
『astrolabe』は中世ラテン語の『astrolabium』に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の『astrolabion』から来ている。ここで『astron』は「星」を、『lambanein』の派生語は「取る／捕える」を意味し、おおむね「星を取る（測る）もの」を示す。
『astrolabion』（ギリシャ語）→『astrolabium』（中世ラテン語）→『astrolabe』（古フランス語）を経て現代英語の『astrolabe』になった。
当初は「星の位置を取る（測る）道具」を指していたが、次第に天文測定・時刻測定・航海に用いる特定の器具を指す語になった。
