語源
「astringe」はラテン語の「astringere」から来ており、「ad-」（変化して「as-」）は「～へ（向かう）」を意味し、「stringere」は「しばる・締める」を意味した。
「astringere」は中世・近世英語に（学術的・医学的ラテン語や古仏語・目信的影響を通じて）借用され、「astringe」の形で残った。
当初は文字どおり「しめつける・締める」を意味し、後に「収縮・収れんさせる」や比喩的な「抑制する・締め付ける」などの意味に広がった。
