語源
「astragalus」はラテン語の『astragalus』に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の『astragalos』に由来する。『astragalos』は「足首の骨」や「関節骨」を意味した。
ギリシャ語『astragalos』はラテン語『astragalus』として取り入れられ、その後学術用語として英語に借用された。解剖学・建築・植物学で用いられるようになった。
当初は「足首の骨」「関節骨」を意味していたが、やがて建築の小さな丸いモールディングや植物属名（Astragalus）などへ比喩的・専門的に拡張された。
