星（星形）
語源
『aster』はギリシャ語の語 'astḗr' に由来し、語幹 'ast-' は「星」を意味した。
『aster』はギリシャ語 'astḗr' からラテン語 'aster' に入り、中世英語・古英語を経て借用された。花の形が小さな星に見えることから、植物名として定着し、星形の物にも用いられるようになった。
当初は文字通り「星」を意味していたが、次第に星形の花（Aster属）を指す語へと変わり、その後は星形の構造一般を指す意味も含むようになった。
