語源
「assonant」はラテン語に由来し、特に動詞「assonare」（『ad-』＋『sonare』から成る）に由来する。『ad-』は「へ向かって」を、『sonare』は「鳴る／音を出す」を意味した。
「assonare」は古フランス語の「assoner／assonance」を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の形容詞・名詞「assonant」（および名詞「assonance」）となった。
当初は「似た音を出す」や「（別の音へ）音を寄せる」という意味だったが、次第に「母音の類似を示す（アソナンス）」という現在の意味に狭まっていった。
