語源
「assize」は古フランス語の『assise』、さらに中世ラテン語の『assisa』に由来し、語根はラテン語の『assidere（寄り添って座る）』に関連しており、『座ること／会合』を指した。
『assise』／中世ラテン語『assisa』（「座ること」や「法令」の意）が中英語の『assise』を経て現代英語の『assize』になり、意味は裁判の会合や規定へと変化した。
当初は「座ること」「会合（およびそれに伴う決定）」を意味していたが、次第に「裁判の会合（巡回裁判）」や「（歴史的な）規定」を指すようになった。
