語源
「assimilation（同化）」はラテン語の『assimilatio』に由来し、接頭辞の『ad-』（変化して『as-』）は「～へ／～に向かって」を、語根の『similis』は「似ている」を意味した。
『assimilation』はラテン語の『assimilatio』から古フランス語・中世ラテン語を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の『assimilation』になった。
当初は「似せる行為」「似ること」を意味していたが、時代とともに文化的・言語的・生物学的な意味へと拡張され、根本的な「似る／似せる」という意味は保たれている。
