語源
'assiento'はスペイン語の'asiento'に由来し、動詞'asentar'（ラテン語系）には「定める／腰を下ろさせる（座らせる）」という意味があった。
'assiento'は中世スペイン語の形から発展した'siento／asiento'から英語へ借用され、17–18世紀に英語で主に奴隷供給契約を指す語として使われるようになった。
当初は「席・定着した場所／定められた取り決め」を意味していたが、英語では次第に奴隷供給のための特定の契約を指す意味に限定された。
