語源
「assertive」はラテン語の「asserere」（過去分詞形は「assertus」）に由来し、接頭辞の「ad-」（同化して「as-」）は「〜へ」、語根の「serere」は「結びつける・つなぐ」を意味しました。
「assertive」はラテン語の語幹「assert-」（「asserere」/「assertus」由来）が後期ラテン語や古フランス語などを経て、語尾の形容詞化接尾辞「-ive」を付けて現代英語の形容詞になりました。
