語源
「asphaltum」はラテン語の後期ラテン語語形「asphaltum」に由来し、天然のビチューメンや屋根・舗装用の材料を指した語である。
「asphaltum」はギリシャ語の『ἀσφάλτος』（硬く／安定した物質、及びビチューメンを指す）から変化し、後期ラテン語の「asphaltum」を経て中世以降の英語（および古フランス語の 'asphalte' など）に入った。
当初は「硬く／動かない物質（およびそのような物質としての天然ビチューメン）」を指していたが、次第に舗装・防水・封止に使われる黒く粘性のあるビチューメンそのものを指すように意味が定着した。
