語源
「asperse」はラテン語の「aspergere」（過去分詞形「aspersus」）に由来し、接頭辞「ad-（a-）」は「〜へ・〜に向かう」を、語根「spargere」は「散らす・撒く」を意味していた。
「asperse」は中世ラテン語や古フランス語の形（例：「aspersare」など）を経て、中英語を通じて現代英語の「asperse」になった。
元来は「（水を）撒く」という意味だったが、比喩的に「汚れを撒き散らす＝評判を汚す」となり、現在は主に「中傷する」という意味で使われるようになった。
