語源
「ashcan」は近代英語で 'ash'（灰）＋ 'can'（缶・容器）から成る複合語で、直訳すると「灰を入れる缶」で、19世紀末から記録がある。
「ash」は古英語の 'æsc'（灰あるいはトネリコ属）に由来し、「can」（容器）は中英語の 'canne' などを経て古ノルマン語や古ラテン語系語から来ている。『ashcan』は19世紀の米国英語で暖炉やストーブの灰を入れる簡易な金属容器を指す言葉として成立した。
