「ascriptive」はラテン語の 'ascribere'（'ad-' + 'scribere' の形）に由来し、'ad-' は「〜へ（向かって）」、'scribere' は「書く」を意味した。形容詞形は中世・新ラテン語（例：'ascriptivus'）を経ている。
ラテン語 'ascribere' から中世／新ラテン語の 'ascriptio'／'ascriptivus' といった形が生じ、これらが英語の形容詞 'ascriptive' として取り入れられた。
当初は「（何かを）書き付ける／割り当てる」という行為に関する語だったが、次第に「（性質・地位などを）帰属させる／割り当てる」という意味に変化し、現在は「帰属・割当に関する」という意味で用いられる。
