語源
「ascription」はラテン語に由来し、特に動詞「ascribere」（『ad-』＋『scribere』）から来ている。ここで『ad-』は「～へ／～に向かって」、『scribere』は「書く」を意味した。
「ascription」は後期ラテン語／中世ラテン語の形「ascriptio」などから発展し、中英語の「ascripcioun」を経て現代英語の「ascription」になった（フランス語を介した可能性もある）。
当初は『書き付ける／書いて割り当てる』という意味に結び付いていたが、現代では『（原因・属性などの）帰属・割り当てをする行為』という広い意味で使われている。
