「ascogonium」はニューラテン語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の要素『askos』（袋・嚢）と『gonos』（種・子）から来ている。
『ascogonium』はギリシャ語の語根『askos』＋『gonos』を組み合わせてニューラテン語で形成され、ラテン語の「ascus」（嚢）などを経て現代の菌類学用語として定着した。
