語源
「ascertain」は古フランス語・アングロ・ノルマン語の『acertener』（a- + certener）に由来し、接頭辞の『a-』はラテン語の『ad-』(「〜へ/〜に」)に由来し、『certener』はラテン語の『certus』（確かな）に関連する語に由来します。
『acertener』は中英語の『ascerten』『ascertainen』のような形を経て、最終的に現代英語の『ascertain』になりました。
当初は「確かなものにする／確定する」という意味でしたが、次第に「（調査などで）突き止める・見つけ出す」という現代的な意味に広がりました。
