『artel』はロシア語の『артель』に由来し、そこではトルコ系の語根『ortak』が「仲間・共同者」を意味していた。
『artel』はロシア語『артель』（タタール語などのトルコ語族の『ortak』からの借用）から変化し、19せいきにロシアの社会経済を記述する英語文献に取り入れられた。
