「arrondissement」はフランス語に由来し、動詞 'arrondir'（接頭辞 'a-' と 'rond' から）が「丸くする」を意味していたことに由来する。
『arrondissement』は古フランス語の 'arrondir' に由来し、さらにラテン語 'rotundus' / 'rotundare' にさかのぼる語形変化を経て現代フランス語の 'arrondissement' となり、英語に借用された。
