語源
「arrest」は古仏語の「arester」に由来し、接頭辞の「a-」（ラテン語の ad- 由来）は「〜へ」を、語幹の「rester」は「とどまる／立ち止まる」を意味しました。
古仏語「arester」から中英語の「arresten」を経て現代英語の「arrest」になりました。形容詞形「arresting」は現在分詞由来の形容詞で、副詞形は接尾辞「-ly」を付けて作られました。
