語源
「arpeggiation」はイタリア語の語に由来し、特に「arpeggiare」から来ている。'arpa'は「ハープ」を意味し、演奏に関する動作を表す語として派生した。
イタリア語の「arpeggiare」は名詞「arpeggio」（ハープのように演奏される音型）を生み、英語では動詞「arpeggiate」として借用され、さらにそこから抽象名詞「arpeggiation」が形成された。
もともとは「ハープで弾くこと」や「ハープのような奏法」を指していたが、やがて多くの楽器に適用される「和音の音を順に弾く（分散和音）」という現在の意味に発展した。
