語源
「arhat」はサンスクリット語の語『arhat』（同義の『arihant』も見られる）に由来し、語根『arh』は『価値がある／値する』を意味した。
『arhat』は19世紀の仏教研究・翻訳を通じて英語に入った。パーリ語の『arahant』も同義の形と意味を保ち、英語の『arhat』へとつながった。
当初は『価値ある者（尊い者）』を意味したが、次第に仏教用語として『涅槃に達した者（悟りを得た尊者）』という専門的な意味に定着した。
