語源
「areopagite」はラテン語後期形の「Areopagites」に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語「Areiopagites（Ἀρειοπαγῖται）」に由来する。ここで「Areios」は「アレース（戦の神）に属する」を意味し、「pagos」は「岩・丘」を意味する（つまり「アレースの丘」を表す）。
ギリシャ語の「Areiopagites」がラテン語の「Areopagites」を経て英語の「areopagite」（中世ラテン語・中英語を通じて）となり、アレオパゴスの評議員を意味する語として用いられるようになった。後に教会的な称号としても使われるようになった。
初めは「アレオパゴス（アレースの丘）の評議員」を意味していたが、時と共にアレオパゴスに関連する人物やそれを称するキリスト教的著述者（例：「ディオニュシオス・アレオパギタ」）を指す語としての用法も生じた。
