語源
「archipelago」はギリシャ語の『arkhipelagos』に由来し、『arkhi-』は「主（chief）」、「pelagos」は「海（sea）」を意味した。
『archipelago』は中世ラテン語やイタリア語の『archipelagus／arcipelago』を経て英語に入り、エーゲ海を指す固有名詞から一般的な『群島』の意味へ変化した。
当初は「（特にエーゲ）主たる海」を指したが、次第に「島々の集まり（群島）」という現在の意味に変化した。
