'archeus'はニューラテン語'archeus'に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語'arkhē'(ἀρχή)にさかのぼる。'arkhē'は「はじめ」「支配」を意味した。
'archeus'は初期近代ラテン語の用法（16世紀のパラケルススの著作など）に現れ、英語には初期近代の科学・秘術文献を通じて取り入れられた。
