語源
「world-soul」はラテン語の「anima mundi」を英語で逐語的に表した語に由来する。ここで「anima」は「魂・息」を、「mundus」は「世界」を意味した。
「anima mundi」は古代ギリシア・ローマの哲学（プラトンやストア派など）で用いられ、中世ラテン語やルネサンス期の文献を経て、近代英語の翻訳・哲学書で「world-soul」として表現されるようになった。
