「arcanist」は英語に由来し、形容詞「arcane」と能動者接尾辞「-ist」から成る。もとの「arcane」はラテン語の「arcanus」（「秘密」）に遡る。
「arcanist」は古フランス語やラテン語の「arcanus／arcanum」を経て英語の「arcane」が入り、その後「arcane」＋「-ist」によって現代英語で成立した。
