「arbutus」はラテン語の『arbutus』に由来し、元は「いちごの木」を意味した。
古代ギリシャ語（記録上はἀρβοῦτος／「arboutos」）からラテン語の『arbutus』に入り、中世ラテン語を経て英語の『arbutus』になった。
当初は古典で「いちごの木」を意味していたが、時代とともにアルブトゥス属の任意の種（マドローネなど）を指すように広がった。
